Digital Storytelling-The Detroit Riots
I chose to create a project that explored the riots that occurred in Detroit during 1967. The riots are often not explored because many do not see them as being important to history or long enough to have made an impact; however, I would disagree completely, For students growing up in the city of Detroit, where I have been actively involved in the community and classroom, the riots affected their ancestors and there life currently . The riots were a time in history in which "Detroiters" (people native to Detroit) saw the need for equality and decided they would take action to gain that freedom and equality. I chose a to create a slideshow about this topic because it is missing from the history books and it should not be. During the time in which Detroit experienced rioting, there were also riots occurring in Newark for similar reasons. The 1960's were a time in history in which equality and freedom was on the forefront and agendas of many. So, to highlight that not only was this a "Detroit" thing but also a movement that others took part in is important to highlight to my students. I would enjoy creating a lesson around this topic and time in history while allowing my students to explore the technology I use to create the digital storytelling.
I found slideroll to be a very easy thing to use to create the slideshow and also exporting it to my website came with ease as well. I could definitely see myself utilizing it again in my classroom and with my students. I think that utilizing this technology could make learning more exciting and fun. Allowing my students to explore history and then composing a slideshow to incorporate creativity brings the creation back to classroom which is something that scholars like Nieto are promoting through their research and studies. I enjoyed that I could add music and also determine how long each slide would play for, allowing for emphasis on some slides while passing over others more swiftly. I did find the website sightly difficult to navigate initially; however, after exploring it further I found it be an ease of access. I think exploring the website will also assist in helping my students navigate a project like this in the future. I could definitely see myself using slideroll with my students.
